Moazzem Hussain (Director)
I have worked for Signposts. Signposts provide accommodation for homeless people. My duty includes interview clients face to face to obtain relevant information, risk assessment, assessment for eligibility, individual support plans, group activities aimed at preventing isolation, building self-confidence, key work with the resident, identify the resident’s needs and making action plans for independent living, working with other statutory agencies. Dealing clients with challenging behaviour, writing assessment reports maintain written records and general office work.
I worked as a member of the Youth Offending Team for Luton Borough Council as a part-time Project Worker, my duties included Action Planning, where a variety of leisure activities are planned for the youths that we are in charge of. Dropping off and picking them up from the activity points, visiting them at home, interacting with their families to see how they are doing. Advising them on what would help them in their situations or what they are interested in. All this data is entered into the computer to keep records.
I am also a sessional worker for the Pathfinder Project for Luton Borough Council, working with young, disabled, and vulnerable people and their families.
My work requires me to work irregular hours and locations. Due to drop off and pick up sites being in other towns such as Bedford, I have had to be able to go out of the borough when needed, and working outside normal office hours is the ‘norm’ for me. This includes working evenings, weekends and occasional bank holidays. As a part-time project worker and Pathfinder Project sessional worker, I have attended many meetings with other professionals.
I have worked through Mitalee on the Youth Inclusion Project (summer school) for Luton Borough Council. I was responsible for all money handling matters, taking registration fees and ensuring that they were correctly lodged in the account book, as well as supervision of the youths on outings and activities. I have done this for a few years.
I have also been a part-time youth worker for Luton Borough Council for 3 years. This work included planning activities for young people, identifying their needs and organising and running the activities. It has given me the opportunity to build up a working relationship with young people.
Since leaving school in Bangladesh I have worked with N.G.O (Non-Government Organisation) as a part-time worker, while at the same time completing my LLB (Bachelor of Law) degree.
While studying at Luton University I have worked as a volunteer at the Luton Law Centre which enabled me to work with people of all ages and as part of a team. I am able to maintain effective communication, consult, persuade, gain commitment, and speak as well as write. My role included handling all office duties including handling all mail. I drafted and typed up letters to clients and organisations, posting outgoing mail, and distributing incoming mail. I also kept client files in order, keeping an effective filing system.
As a law graduate, I have a good understanding of current legislation and issues relating to young children. I have a very good understanding of the Housing Act 1996, Asylum and Immigration act 1996, Housing Benefit legislation, Family Law Reform Act. Homelessness was my interesting subject at University.
At present, I am vice-chair for the Bury Park Street Festival Association. My role has been to plan activities, which are suitable for the community, i.e.- entertainment for girls/boys, children’s attractions, street procession, DJ’s, music, etc. While planning such a project I have identified the appropriate needs for the young people and designed the programme accordingly. Taking responsibility for health and safety and protection for the young is also a key factor.
I am also the vice-chair for Purbachal, which is a community group. Where recently I was involved in organising a drama production for the young people from the Bangladeshi community to celebrate the independence day of their country and recognition for their mother language. I played an important role in the production, and in staging the play. I was also in charge of the coordination of the volunteers, where it was very important for me to involve young people in decision making in all aspects of the project. I was also the cell leader for an exhibition arranged by the Luton Council of Faith called ‘Who We Are in Luton’. I was in charge of collecting and setting up the display put on by our group. I helped visitors with their enquiries, explaining the display, or function of any item that was in the display.
Being involved in such projects and festivals has provided me with the opportunity to work with other agencies such as the Bangladesh embassy, Luton Borough Council, Police, St Johns Ambulance, Luton Fire Service, Luton Central Library, TV Channels, etc. With my knowledge and ability, I am able to produce an annual development plan or reports for management or the steering groups if required.
I have the full understanding of given equal opportunities to all and not discriminate against people of race, gender, sexual orientation, creed, the colour of skin, religious beliefs, national origin or economic status.
